The Challenge
A man with learning disabilities contracted Covid-19. He was nursed in bed, said “no thank you” to therapy and deconditioned. He was unable to walk and became dependent for personal care. The plan was to discharge him to a nursing home.
The Change
We recognised that “no thank you” did not mean “I don’t want therapy” but did mean “I’m not sure about this”. We realised the therapy needed a purpose; he didn’t want to get out of bed for no reason, but was motivated to get up for a wash.
The Impact
After 2 months of therapy and support, he is now able to walk unaided, transfer independently and complete all personal care. He has even managed to climb a full flight of stairs and I’m delighted to say he is due to return home this week!
