The Challenge
Client with HIV-related dementia, on long term placement. Client required close supervision to ensure safety. Referred to OT as nursing staff were concerned as to how to support client, minimise risk and provide a more stimulating environment.
The Change
Establishing a daily routine and orientating client to the day’s events. Worked with support staff to advise re: approaches to care – completing “This is Me” document to ensure person-centred approach was provided; encouraging client choice .
The Impact
By instilling small structured changes into his daily routine and educating the nursing staff about the approach to care, client appeared more orientated on the unit, and participated more fully in daily tasks, responding well to the structured day.
