The Challenge
Following a stroke, a gentleman who had been admitted to the hospital was feeling really depressed and missed his dogs. He hated being indoors on a busy noisy ward. He need further occupational therapy input before he could be discharged home.
The Change
We completed as many of our therapy sessions outside I arranged with his family to bring the dogs to the garden outside the ward. We did some cognitive, balance and upper limb therapy whilst the dogs were there and he spent more time with his family
The Impact
It enabled meaningful occupation and interaction for the patient. He reported feeling much less depressed and had a smile on his face. Using a different approach than standard acute hospital intervention demonstrates the range of the profession.
