The Challenge
Gentleman with advanced dementia in an older adult mental health ward, whose engagement and levels of activities are limited. The gentleman can become resistive when requiring personal care.
The Change
Occupational therapy staff undertook a life story with patient and family, from this the gentleman has always loved animals and grown up with many pets.
The Impact
A pet therapy dog was introduced and for the duration of the pet therapy sessions the gentleman is over joyed, engaging, smiling and laughing. After the session the gentleman continues to hold onto the positive emotions associated with pet therapy.
