The Challenge
Jamie* was a young man who had just started a 5 year prison sentence. He was frequently aggressive and violent towards staff and other prisoners, and had damaged the locks in his cell. He was at risk of getting a longer sentence as a result.
The Change
We set up a weekly yoga group in the day care centre. Breathing techniques, relaxation, meditation and postures that could be carried out in prisoner's cells were taught. There was time at the end for participants to share their experiences over tea.
The Impact
Over the course of 6 sessions, Jamie's behaviour changed considerably. He established a daily yoga routine in his cell and reported that he did not feel as angry or anxious. No further negative behaviour was recorded in his behaviour report.
