The Challenge
Engaging a patient in OT who had difficulty communicating & symptoms of Parkinson’s initially felt a challenge, there was limited history & he couldn't tell us his goals, however it was discovered he was taking an interest in plants on the ward.
The Change
I gave him the role of plant carer for the ward; we bought him his own watering can & I offered 1:1 horticultural sessions to create seasonal planters for the garden. The sessions were graded to allow him to participate with his physical limitations.
The Impact
He valued this occupation & he was motivated for therapy. The activities provided opportunities for staff to praise his work & interact using practical tasks & it was collaborative. He was able to be productive again which helped his mental health.
