The Challenge
Joe has a severe Learning Disability and Dementia and was struggling to feed himself getting tired and stressed and so giving up. Staff supporting him were not clear how much he could and should do himself still for his wellbeing.
The Change
Staff had already identified a good spoon. A nonslip mat was suggested, and the OT advised on approach and pacing including when to use hand over hand support. Different cups were also discussed to maximise his ability to drink without spilling.
The Impact
The OT provided both reassurance to staff and clear guidelines on level of support and pacing around meals were added to his mealtime guidelines. This maintained the balance between getting the right support and maximising independence at mealtimes.
