The Challenge
I oversee a therapeutic cafe in a medium secure unit. Patients with only campus leave could not access the local shops. This meant that they could not go and select toiletries and had to rely on family or staff to chose for them.
The Change
Patients were asked what items would they would want to purchase from an on-site shop, these were bought and shelving unit were purchased. This was fitted last week and the shop will be opened from next week.
The Impact
Patients will shortly be able to select items they want for personal care. This will decrease their reliance on others and increase their autonomy and well being. It will also provide a role for another patient with stock taking and ordering.
