The Challenge
I was helping to cover the respiratory wards and did an initial assessment and transfers with a lady who had recently been discharged from ITU. She was highly anxious not wanting to go home and felt great remorse for being abusive to staff on ITU.
The Change
I sat down with her for approx 45 mins and just discussed her worries. From that we came up with solutions e.g writing a card to ITU thanking them and also making sure on discharge if she has worried to call her GP.
The Impact
From this the lady was very grateful, explaining that no one had the time to speak to her and make her feel better about discharge. In acute medicine it’s hard to have lots of time but making the time is important!
