The Challenge
My third placement took place on an Acute Surgical ward that predominately saw patients who required bowel surgery and stomas. I had the opportunity to spend the day with the Stoma Nursing Team, who educated patients about the maintenance of Stoma
The Change
Through observation, I could see patient was overwhelmed by having to remember all the verbal instructions and reported that the information sheet was too confusing. With consent, I devised a simplified step-by-step instruction sheet- laminated.
The Impact
The patient found this very helpful and became independent with the maintenance of the stoma bag reading due to reading it between visits. This reduced feelings of anxiety, and enhanced independence, preventing the need of support on discharge.
