The Challenge
A lady in her 50’s with MS was referred to Social Care OT. Due to high pain levels and contractures she was unable to be hoisted and had been in bed upstairs for over 5 years. She was unable to access hospital appointments and felt isolated.
The Change
The OT liaised with the local fire service and arranged to transfer the lady (horizontally) downstairs. They used a heavy duty carry sheet (during there training evening) with support from the OT. A new bed and airflow mattress were provided.
The Impact
The lady is more comfortable, her risk of pressure sores has reduced and Moving and Handling has improved as the old mattress was very sunken. She can now access her hospital appointments and has a lovely view of her garden.
