The Challenge
Patient in a psychiatric intensive care unit in seclusion, which resulted in occupational deprivation. Usually OT doesn’t get involved when someone is in seclusion. The challenge how to find suitable therapeutic intervention through a glass window.
The Change
Daily contact. Therapeutic interventions included, listening and talking about music, Reading a newspaper, Playing connect four through the glass. Being present when seclusion was opened for reviews.
The Impact
Patient built up good therapeutic relationship with OT, was more settled in seclusion. Multidisciplinary teams were in agreement that the best way to get the person out of seclusion was for him to access occupational therapy as soon as he left.
