The Challenge
I was working with a homeless refugee with serious mental health issue, he didn't really trust anyone due to past turmatic experience. I have had difficulties at the start to build a rapport so that he knows I am there to help him.
The Change
Instead of focusing on his mental health illness, I tried to understand what's meaningful to him. Overtime, he started to trust me a little more. In the end, we have identified that having a home is what he needs to rebuild his life in a new country.
The Impact
In just 9 weeks, this refugee went from being homeless to be in a rental flat that he call home. He was able to invite his friends over for food, which is a massive part of the culture that he came from. This milestone marked a new beginning for him.
