The Challenge
We were finding that we had a high number of incidents in our main communal area on a psychiatric intensive care unit. Service users were having a negative impact on one another and the environment was challenging for everyone.
The Change
We started a gardening group which allowed service users to engage in therapeutic and meaningful activity AND allowed them to have more access to the garden area.
The Impact
Service users were noticeably calmer and the number of incidents reduced. It also improved the ward atmosphere, service users were taking ownership of the ward environment and we received lots of positive feedback!
