The Challenge
Toby* was struggling to effectively brush his teeth. He was unaware that he needed to brush his back teeth, did not tolerate coactive support and appeared to struggle to follow verbal prompts.
The Change
I modelled brushing my teeth alongside Toby* to show him what to do and normalise the activity rather than verbally telling him what to do. Staff now model every day.
The Impact
Toby* is now able to tolerate staff modelling, shows awareness that he needs to brush his back teeth and will engage in the activity independently for up to 2 minutes.
