The Challenge
A patient identified that they found gardening a meaningful occupation and something that they previously enjoyed engaging in. The patient was being nursed in seclusion and the only contact we could have was through a glass window for safety reasons.
The Change
To promote choice and independence we agreed that the patient would direct the gardening verbally through the glass window and I would provide the hands-on parts of the task. They chose things like how much soil, water and positioning of the plant.
The Impact
The patient was able to complete a task and lead choice in an environment that limits it. They showed a sense of pride and wanted to continue the care of the plant following this creating a new role and purpose that will follow the initial task.
