The Challenge
While working on a stroke rehabilitation ward, I was working with a patient who had low mood which was impacting on them engaging in therapy and maximising rehab potential. Patient was low in mood due to not being able to complete an interest of his.
The Change
His interest was to watch motorway traffic pass by and identify Eddie Stobart trucks (each truck had a name). The patient liked to tick them off in his annual. For half-hour I sat with the patient and watched motorway CCTV on a laptop as they passed.
The Impact
By slightly adapting the patient's care plan and goals by completing a meaningful activity with the patient over 3 days, the patient's mood increased and started to engage with further functional Occupational Therapy as well as physiotherapy.
