The Challenge
A patient I worked with recently felt they were not able to fully fulfil their family roles due to requiring assistance to move using a manual wheelchair whilst in hospital.
The Change
We sat together and reprioritised goals to focus on powdered wheelchair use. A wheelchair was loaned and sessions involved graded wheelchair training and visual processing work to help the patient safely pilot the powdered wheelchair.
The Impact
The patient achieved their goal of using the powered wheelchair meaning they felt better able to access the wider environment and spend time with their family without the need for healthcare staff assisting. This gave them control and autonomy.
