The Challenge
I was working in the learning disabilities team and found it difficult to engage with the client that I was working with. She appeared to be very shy in nature and never looked at me on previous home visits despite using simple language or pictures.
The Change
I liaised closely with our art therapist who found out that the client liked fabrics and sewing. I therefore bought a dreamcatcher kit from a local crafts store which had similar principles of sewing as a way of engaging with the client.
The Impact
By using a meaningful activity to the client, the client showed willingness to engage with me during the rest of the planned sessions and we even made breakfast together with her mother.
