The Challenge
Elderly woman with profound physical and learning disabilities was unable to leave her bed / room due to an extreme intolerance of hoisting/slings. She had been in her room for 7 months with limited sensory input. She had no family and no visitors.
The Change
After trying many slings and techniques, OT researched a specialist small chair /bed and transfer slide board for trial. Staff trained in safe use. Client very at ease with the flat slide transfer and able to tolerate the equipment.
The Impact
Client was able to leave her bed and room to spend time with other residents or be outside. She demonstrated an enjoyment of this through greater eye contact and looking around at her environment. She was less agitated and laughed more.
