The Challenge
Betty had a fall at home resulting in a fractured left shoulder. In hospital she struggled to feed herself as she is left handed and found it very awkward to manage meals with one hand. Betty found it embarrassing when the nurses had to cut her food
The Change
Betty was spending a lot of time in bed in hospital so we encouraged her to sit up at meal times. We advised nursing staff to provide soup in a mug and provided Betty with a knork
The Impact
With the provision of one small aid and some simple advice Betty was able to feed herself independently. This minimised Betty's feelings of embarrassment and encouraged her that there were ways she could adapt to her temporary restrictions
