The Challenge
Jon (pseudonym) a young man with a learning disability & diagnosis of ASD was referred as he was having unpredictable incidents where he was distressed & damaging property where he lived & in the community. Staff did not feel confident supporting him
The Change
OT assessment informed the change. I gave guidance on how to set up tasks so that Jon could be successful. I worked with Jon to develop a sensory ladder, explored what activities helped him to feel calmer and made this into a plan that he could use.
The Impact
Staff supporting Jon understood him better & he started to initiate following his sensory plan when he or staff noticed his arousal level was rising. Incidents were less frequent & Jon participated in a variety of meaningful activities successfully.
