The Challenge
A large number of elective orthopaedic patients fed back after having foot surgery and subsequently being non weight bearing that they felt un prepared and anxious about how to mobilise and cope at home. This therefore increased their length of stay.
The Change
The presence of occupational therapy within pre-assessment clinic to highlight non-weight bearing patients and have face-to-face discussions with these patients to provide advice and equipment prior to surgery ensuring they are better prepared pre op
The Impact
All non weight bearing patients are now seen by occupational therapy in pre assessment. 94% of patients are now discharged day 0-1 and 100% of patients reported full satisfaction with this service and felt much better prepared for their surgery.
