The Challenge
A patient diagnosed with autism and sensory processing difficulties on an acute mental health ward experienced challenges with the ward environment and a lack of sensory stimulation; leading to increased self-harm attempts.
The Change
I supported the patient create: a sensory diet, including activities which match her interests and regulate her emotions; provided opportunities for sensory-based activity; and a sensory box full of self-directed sensory strategies.
The Impact
The patient now engages in the strategies provided to calm, organise and alert her nervous system. The patient has begun to engage in occupational therapy and exerts less self-harm behaviours.
