RCOT’s Julia Roberts and Stephanie Tempest are leading on the work to update two key RCOT resources, but know that input from a wide range of our members will enhance the final products.
They would really value your thoughts on the early drafts, from 7 January until 4 February 2020.
Since last summer we’ve been working hard to draft new versions of the Professional Standards for Occupational Therapy Practice, Conduct and Ethics alongside the Career Development Framework. We’ve made one big change…for the first time the new Professional Standards have been combined with the Code of Ethics so we will have one resource instead of two.
In the Professional Standards, we want to publish a resource that acts as an essential ‘go to’ reference point to support day-to-day decision making – not a document that you only refer to when there is a serious incident or complaint. We can only do this if we have member input. This is your chance to make the Professional Standards your ‘go to’ resource, empowering you to handle the ethical dilemmas encountered in your workplace, such as judging your competency to carry out new responsibilities, or carers refusing manual handling equipment.
In the uplift of the Career Development Framework, we want to make sure the new resource gives our profession the language to express our unique knowledge and skills that we bring to all career levels. And to ensure it continues to help us plan our own learning, development and career pathways. Now we’re inviting you to add your voice to the discussion to help us ensure the Framework remains a flexible and contemporary resource.
The main reason we wanted to work together on the reviews is to make sure they align and harmonise. But they are different. Where the Professional Standards underpin the work that you do, the Framework supports you to identify the next steps for your learning and careers.
So, get involved.
You can do this in a variety of ways:
- Grab this as an excellent CPD activity and share your feedback on the draft resources with us via the link at the beginning of this blog; OR
- Take the draft Professional Standards and Framework to your next team meeting and send us your collective feedback
- Help spread the word that we need your views from across the UK, all settings and sectors and every career level
- Think about:
- How you use the current versions of these resources?
- Your opinions on the accessibility of the language/terminology used in the new resources
- How relevant do you feel they are for you in your place of work and/or study?
- What should be included… or what should be removed?
- What are the supporting materials we can think about developing to help you use these new resources?

Because we know that engaging with your professional body is recognised by the HCPC as a CPD activity - and because we genuinely appreciate you taking the time to work with us - a letter from Julia Scott, RCOT Chief Executive, can be accessed at the end of the survey for your CPD portfolio.
Happy New Year! We look forward to hearing from you……
