Mental Health update

The last months of 2011 were busy with mental health events, meetings and the release of new briefing papers.

We ran two successful events with COTSS – Mental Health about the importance of being able to address the physical health needs of mental health service users (see January OTnews, page 47).

These were followed by an event with the Centre for Mental Health about how OTs can embrace Individual Placement Support (IPS). Experts were able to share their experience of implementing IPS with delegates and the Centre for Mental Health has offered additional support for those struggling locally to use the model.

COT also attended a Mental Health Summit organised by the third sector to discuss how the financial situation is impeding the delivery of the England policy paper “No Health without Mental Health”. In tandem with this, COT and partners released a letter on World Mental Health Day criticising the Government for failing to protect those with mental health problems during the recession.

Finally, two new briefing papers were released about care coordination and medicines management which are available for members. For more information please contact Genevieve.Smyth@cot.co.uk.
