With over 600 members, our Specialist Section - Children, Young People and Families is one of the largest, and works to promote the unique benefits of occupational therapy as a means of enabling children, young people, and their families.

Within the Specialist Section there are three clinical forums providing a focus for managers, and covering acute settings as well as child and adolescent mental health.

A comprehensive network of regional groups across the UK helps support members on a local level, providing information through informal meetings, training events and courses.

As well as these local events, there is an annual conference, which this year takes place on November 17-18 in Bristol. The event will focus on the development of practical skills to “future proof” practice through inspiring keynote speeches, scheduled networking and ambassador for change panels.

Dawn Smith, who has recently been part of the team leading the Department of Health’s Allied Health Professional Service Improvement Project will open the conference.

The second day will feature Ann Huc, an OT with many years experience in working with children, young people and families. who has more recently worked with health professionals in embedding service user perspective into practice.

As well as events and networking opportunities, the specialist section also offers a wealth of information through their biannual Journal and bi-monthly newsletter. For a taster, you can read their August 2011 newsletter.

Finally, the Specialist Section has a bursary worth up to £200 to support members with CPD, and a research grant worth up to £2,000.
