Our HistoryORGANIZATIONAL PROFILE Chartered by an Act of Congress on September 2, 1958, the National Museum of American Jewish Military History documents and preserves the contributions of Jewish Americans to the peace and freedom of the United States, educates the public concerning the courage, heroism and sacrifices made by Jewish Americans who served in the armed forces, and works to combat anti-Semitism. Meaningful and timely exhibits and educational programs explain the role of American Jews in the armed forces throughout American history and document the numerous other contributions made by Jewish American veterans to America's cultural, social and political history. The Museum, located in Washington, DC, near Dupont Circle, is the national repository for the collection of objects, documents and memorabilia of Jewish American veterans. Two full floors of our building (approximately 6,000 sq.ft) are devoted to exhibitions. Extensive artifacts and archives are stored in climate-controlled storage areas (approximately 5000 collections of personal papers and 10,000 museum objects). The Museum has 2,500 members, its newsletter, Museum News, is sent to 50,000 people, and it serves over 10,000 visitors annually. There are five paid staff and three volunteers. It is open Monday - Friday from 9am to 5pm. On Sundays closed except for previously arranged tours. There is no admission charge. Arrangements for group tours are generally made by advance registration; however, we do accept unscheduled group arrivals. Our hours and group tour program are publicized through the general museum brochure, local newspapers and the newsletter. The first professional staff member, the Archivist, was hired in 1988. In 1990 a Curator, Administrator, Administrative Assistant, and Accountant were hired. An active internship and volunteer program is in place. The Museum has been featured on Fox TV News, Channel 4 NBC News and twice on WETA's "Around Town." The Museum's exhibitions have been favorably covered in numerous publications and featured in many guidebooks, including: Detroit Jewish News; World War II magazine; Daily Press (Newport News, VA); Northern Virginia Sun; New York Times; Washington Post; Baltimore Sun; Washington Jewish Week; Washingtonian magazine; Washington City Paper; Jewish Exponent (Philadelphia); Stars and Stripes; AAA Guide to Washington; Annapolis Capitol; Amit Magazine; Fodor's Guide to Washington; The Forward; Hadassah Magazine; Jewish Museums of North America; Sightseers Guide to Washington; Washington Flyer; Washington Times. Newly erected city street signs point potential visitors and tourists toward the Museum. Recent large mailings inviting three hundred tour bus companies and travel agents to bring their groups and increased listings of this Museum in guidebooks to Washington, DC, have brought steadily growing numbers of tours and visitors. As a result of all of the above, annual visitation has increased to over 10,000 annually. In addition the booklet provides information on the Jewish War Veterans of the U.S.A., listing current activities and officers.
